What is the Social Security Administration (SSA)?

The Social Security Administration is the federal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that administers Social Security Act.

Originally named the Social Security Board, it was SSA that assigned you your Social Security number. SSA also administers many social relief and financial security programs, including:

  • Social Security retirement insurance
  • Survivors insurance
  • Disability insurance 
  • Supplemental Security Income program for the aged, blind, and disabled.
