A Conversation with OnPay Ambassador Patrick Ramsden

Welcome to the Partner Spotlight Series, where we sit down with experienced bookkeepers and accountants to learn about their firms and explore how OnPay helps them provide exceptional payroll services to their clients.

Tell us your name and a little bit about your firm.

My name is Patrick Ramsden, and I’m the founder of BookkeepingOps, based in Boca Raton, Florida. We specialize in client accounting services with a focus on operational excellence.

Our firm started as a concierge and boutique service about 12 years ago, providing administrative support, and over time, we’ve grown into a team of 13 professionals. We serve a broad range of clients, including law firms, retail and franchise businesses, restaurants, medical offices, and real estate companies.

What made you want to work in the accounting industry?

Accounting kind of found me. I got involved when helping a client launch their accounting department, and that experience, combined with running a family business, pulled me in.

I’ve found it extremely gratifying to manage the operational side of accounting — implementing efficient processes, working with technology, and helping clients achieve better results. It’s challenging work, but also very satisfying.

Fill in the blank: I never start my workday without _.

Coffee.

I’m an early morning person, usually up between 4 and 6 am I sit, have my coffee, and gather my energy while thinking through the day. I find that having that quiet time really sets the tone and helps me stay focused and productive.

How do you view your role as an accountant in your clients’ businesses and where do you provide the most value?

We bring deep expertise to the work we do. Our team is highly experienced in QuickBooks Online, and when systems don’t provide the efficiency we need we create Excel models to fill in the gaps. We stay in our lane and focus on operational accounting, leaving tax strategy to the experts.

Our tagline is “Focus on what’s most helpful for you,” and we take that seriously.

We pride ourselves on being proactive, communicating clearly, and asking questions that protect and benefit our clients.  Overall, we aim to be knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to work with, so our clients feel supported every step of the way.

When you are not helping clients, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?

Outside of work, I’m focused on maintaining energy and balance, so I enjoy playing and watching soccer — especially the Premier League. I also like to travel and explore new places whenever I get the chance.

If you weren’t in the accounting industry, what job would you most like to have?

I actually didn’t originally plan on a career in accounting. I was a computer science major, did management consulting, and even worked as an engineer. If I weren’t here, I think I’d be in operations or some form of consulting.

Why do you recommend OnPay to your clients?

Three main reasons: price point, functionality, and service. OnPay offers competitive pricing and the functionality that clients need. We’ve been partners for over 10 years, and the support is reliable.

When we need OnPay, they’re there. Payroll can be difficult, but having a partner like OnPay makes it as smooth and simple as possible.

What are you excited about for the future of the accounting industry?

It’s a constant learning process. But what’s exciting is that AI has the potential to make the biggest impact, helping streamline processes and reduce manual work. Cloud technology allows us to sync and integrate systems more efficiently, and advances in working with offshore resources make us more cost-effective while maintaining quality.

Overall, technology is making things more interesting, more efficient, and opening the doors to focus on areas where we can make a more meaningful impact, like advisory or controllership services.

What is one piece of advice you would give to a small business owner who is just starting out?

Accounting is fundamentally about risk management and compliance. Many small business owners aren’t aware of all the requirements and potential pitfalls.

My advice is to either have the capability and time to handle it yourself or connect with a detail-oriented resource who can help guide you. A good accountant may worry a little more than like — that’s exactly the kind of partner you want.

How has OnPay impacted your relationships with your clients?

Some clients come to us with an existing payroll provider and experience issues. When that happens, we strongly recommend OnPay. It’s fast to implement, and we can either train them or let them use it directly. Overall, it strengthens our relationships by reducing stress and ensuring compliance.

Do you have any advice for bookkeepers and accountants who are just looking to get into payroll?

Partnering with a national provider makes a big difference. Payroll can be manual, time-consuming, and there’s a lot of room for error.

Most accountants don’t want to manage payroll themselves, so using a reliable partner like OnPay makes the process easier, scalable, and far less stressful.
